Anton Gostev (Senior Vice President, Product Management) used the newsletter from 02/08/21 to report on a super‑fast backup system that achieved a maximum throughput of 11.4 GB/s. That's why the "Beat The Gostev" Challenge is looking for the fastest Veeam Backup environment in the UK & Ireland.
What speeds can you achieve with your Veeam backup environment?
Take part in our challenge!
Register on our website and send a screenshot showing your maximum throughput. These prizes are available for the 3 fastest environmentsThose who also post their results on LinkedIn or Twitter using #BeatTheGostev and rack up the most likes by September 30 can also win an extra mystery prize!
Follow these steps to take part
Register for the challenge and agree to the T&Cs
Take a screenshot of the result along with a brief description of the environment, then send this to BeatTheGostev@veeam.com
Alternatively, you can post the screenshot with #BeatTheGostev on LinkedIn or Twitter
If you have one of the 3 fastest backup systems at the end of the challenge, and/or your post has gained the most likes by September 30, you win a prize!
- Should separate storage systems be used as the source and destination?
Yes, storage systems must be physically separated and independent.
- Can RAM disks be used?
No, backups must be stored on permanent storage systems and also be available after the backup environment has been restarted.
- Is 11.4 GB/s a minimum requirement?
No, this is about the quickest setup in terms of a backup job's peak performance. However, we would be delighted if a higher speed was reached.
- Does a specific type of hardware have to be used?
No, the choice is yours. The specifications of the environment must be explicitly stated.
- What type of environment must be backed up?
The backups must be made directly from one or several active Hyper-V or vSphere VMs. The VMs to be backed up must be based on the OVF template provided, operated based on the guide provided, and remain unchanged in terms of content. Every VM must be prepared independently using the OVF template and must not be copied from an existing VM. Download the VM Template here. MD5 hash: 7BB0A57A2A626154714C81D7474802AD
- Will the environment be reviewed?
Yes, if the environment is one of the fastest, then a Veeam staff member will carry out a review and a detailed record of the environment in question. It must be possible to achieve the measured speed once again.
- How long must the environment be available?
The environment does not have to be available for a specified period. However, if a Veeam staff member is due to carry out a review and a record, then this must be planned accordingly. There is no chance to win later on without this process taking place. If this is a temporary environment which has to be promptly dismantled, then a review should be requested at least one week in advance. Consultation should take place in good time if a specific situation is to be agreed upon.
- Are there conditions for the backup job?
The speed must be achieved with an active full backup of an individual backup job. There are no restrictions on the number of VMs that can be backed up in a backup job.
- Can I participate more than once?
A team can only register once, but multiple values may be submitted.
- What should be visible in the requested screenshot?
The screenshot should show the highest THROUGHPUT value. Here is Anton Gostev's result:
